How to Practice Food Hygiene

Everyone knows about the body hygiene. But what is food hygiene? This definition combines a number of rules by which the food should be stored, prepared and eaten appropriately. So, what does it mean to practice food hygiene and how to prevent the possibility of poisoning or contamination?


What is considered food hygiene?

This area is one of the branches of general hygiene and studies the features of human nutrition, depending on its gender, age and constitutional characteristics.

It was during the development of the area of “food hygiene” that the science of dietology emerged, which develops the basis for proper therapeutic nutrition.

The main requirements for food hygiene are:

  • An equal amount of caloric content of a person’s daily diet and energy consumption during the day
  • Compliance of the proportions of food taken with the characteristics of the body
  • Eating food that does not cause harm to health (without chemicals, etc.)
  • Distribution of meals throughout the day
  • Adherence to food safety from the point of view of sanitary and epidemiological standards.


Why food hygiene is important?

The world around us, including the food we eat, is full of a huge number of microorganisms that are not always useful and safe for our body. Many of them can multiply under favourable conditions and produce a strong poison, which, if ingested with food, can have a very negative impact on human health. These microorganisms include bacteria, yeast and moulds.

Moulds can occur on food if the environment (warm, dark, wet. etc.) contributes to this. When penetrating the body, moulds can cause severe food poisoning. Yeasts can multiply on food, which contains moisture and sugar. Their entry into the body is extremely undesirable.

Harmful bacteria cause food spoilage and, as a result, food poisoning. They can get into the human body because of:

  • Dirty hands
  • Impure surface
  • Muddy water
  • Burns and wounds
  • Domestic (and other) animals, etc.


What food hygiene rules should be observed?

If you are determined to keep food hygiene, try to adhere to the following recommendations:

  • Wash fruit and vegetables
  • Observe shelf life of food
  • Drink only boiled water
  • Wash your hands thoroughly
  • Do not eat food with fingers and do not lick your fingers while eating
  • Disinfect the objects used to consume food (knives, forks, etc.) more often
  • Timely remove garbage from your kitchen
  • Do not hurry when eating
  • Chew the food thoroughly
  • Do not drink liquid while eating
  • Eat only products that have been processed properly (thermally, etc.).

If, for any reason, you still have food poisoning, you can use detoxifying medicines to get rid of its symptoms, which reduce clinical symptoms of toxic-allergic reactions.
