Why Do You Need A First Aid Kit and What Should It Contain

Many people don’t even think about it, but in fact a first aid kit (whether it’s home, car or camping) and its contents is a very important topic. The first aid kit contents can help not only in case of a cut or a bite, but also in situations with serious injuries and exacerbations of the disease.

When do you need a first aid kit?

A first aid kit will be very useful if you need to provide first aid at an institution, at a construction site, on a trip, in a camping or at home.

Remember: if you decide to go on a journey (cruise), on a long hiking or excursion, it is always important to have a comfortable hiking suitcase (or other reliable packaging) with the most essential medicines. Take care of the tightness of the first aid kit that you take with you on a long distance.

A few words about hiking

It is one thing to get sick or to suffer from a bite at home or in a city (where you can find a pharmacy and a doctor), and it’s quite different when you are at the time being alone with nature. That’s when a first aid kit can really save your live.

Of course, a person with medical education (or a group leader) who, if necessary, can quickly provide first aid to a victim, usually takes part in hiking. However, just in case, every participant of a hike/trip should be at least informed about one or another medicine to be prepared for various surprises. As they say, forewarned is forearmed.

Moreover, main thing is to conceive that hiking is not for you if you have serious health problems – in the field nobody will be able to cure you. Indeed, a first aid kit should in any case contain the most important medicines, but they are not a universal panacea. Medicines that are usually collected in a first aid kit before the hike are conditionally divided into 3 groups:

  • Those that help quickly “recover” the health of the victim (in case of minor and non-hazardous injuries)
  • Those that help maintain the condition of the victim within 2 days
  • Those that help maintain the condition of the victim within 5 days.

It is highly undesirable to “importune” a group leader or a camp doctor for any medicine just for prevention. Remember that the amount of medicines in the first aid kit is usually limited.

What medicines we are talking about?

If you prepare a first aid kit only for yourself and your family, then medicines are selected individually and maybe even after a consultation with a doctor. But when it comes to the basic and most essential aids, they necessarily include:

  • Gauze and elastic bandages (usually 3 packs)
  • Tourniquet
  • Wool and gauze napkins
  • Set of adhesive plasters
  • Cold (hypothermic) packages
  • Tweezers and scissors
  • Set of gloves
  • Peroxide and iodine
  • A vial of ammonium chloride
  • Burn-treating, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic agents (ointments, etc.)
  • Antiseptic eye drops
  • Solution for elimination of dehydration of the body (oral rehydration)
  • Several packs of activated carbon
  • Nitro-glycerine (if a patient suffers from acute cardiac insufficiency)
  • Sedatives (motherwort, mint, valerian)
  • Tablets with antipyretic and analgesic effect (Analgin, Panadol, etc.)
  • Anti-allergic medicines (Loratadine, Hydrocortisone, etc.)
  • Steroids (if an allergic reaction of a patient worsens).
